Quality Cleaning Company Supports Sunderland Eye Infirmary Handover for Kier and the NHS

Quality Cleaning Company Ltd is proud to have supported the successful handover of the new Sunderland Eye Infirmary, a landmark healthcare development delivered by Kier on behalf of the NHS.

As one of the largest and most significant healthcare construction projects completed in the North East in recent years, the development required an intensive and highly coordinated cleaning schedule to support the final stages of construction, commissioning, inspections, and handover.

Our team worked long hours, weekends, and evening shifts throughout the final phase of the project to ensure completed areas were cleaned and ready for inspection as they became available.

Project Overview:

The new Sunderland Eye Infirmary represents a major investment in specialist healthcare services for the region, providing state of the art facilities that will serve patients from across the North East for years to come.

With the project approaching completion, Quality Cleaning Company was appointed to deliver a comprehensive construction cleaning package to support Kier and the NHS in preparing the facility for handover.

The Scope of Works:

Our works included:

  • Full builders cleans throughout the facility.
  • Detailed sparkle cleans ahead of inspections and occupation.
  • High-level external cleaning using specialist MEWP access.
  • Cleaning across multiple phases of the project.
  • Final presentation cleans to ensure all areas met handover standards.

Given the scale of the building and the pace of the works, the project required significant labour resources and a flexible approach to delivery.

The Challenge:

The final stages of any major healthcare development are demanding, and Sunderland Eye Infirmary was no exception.

With multiple contractors working simultaneously and areas being released in phases, cleaning activities needed to be carefully coordinated to maintain consistency and momentum. Tight deadlines meant that work had to be carried out outside of normal working hours, including weekends, evenings, and nights.

The project also included specialist high-level external cleaning works, requiring the use of MEWPs and detailed planning to safely access elevated areas of the building.

Our Approach:

To meet the demands of the project, our dedicated team carried out builders cleans, sparkle cleans, and specialist access cleaning.

Working closely with Kier’s site management team, we adapted our resources as areas became available and ensured our cleaning aligned with key handover milestones.

By operating flexible shift patterns we were able to maximise productivity while supporting the wider construction program.

Regular quality inspections ensured every area achieved the standard expected for a flagship NHS healthcare facility.
